Now that I've specified which anxiety disorder, what are some methods that may help?
1. Encourage baby steps, and embrace improvements With children suffering from SAD, establishing and maintaining friendships can be difficult. Starting small is much easier to adjust, as opposed to simply thrusting a child into a social situation under the "sink or swim" pretense (they will most likely sink, and be miserable in the process). Parents and teachers alike can adopt this method; start by working on eye contact, smiling, etc. Then work up to talking, working in small or one-on-one groups, making play dates, etc. After becoming more comfortable working with their peers, children with SAD may begin to feel more comfortable with the idea of presentations, big birthday parties, etc.
