Now that I've specified which anxiety disorder, what are some methods that may help?
1. Help them recognize the physical symptoms as normal, and help them develop techniques to cope/manage The physical symptoms of panic attacks can be very scary and traumatizing, especially for a child. Helping them recognize that the physical sensations that they are feeling are normal, and recreating them (running up the stairs to simulate shortness of breath, spinning in a chair, etc.) to develop ways to calm them, can help immensely. For example, if a child with panic disorder suffers from shortness of breath, in the moment it can be terrifying (thus more anxiety). Normalizing their physical symptoms by making them out of breath, and helping them find ways to calm down, can be applied in scenarios when they are having another attack. 2. Give children with agoraphobia an escape, and help them in situations where they have previously had attacks Children with agoraphobia can struggle a lot in school settings where they have previously experienced panic attacks. For example, if a child had a panic attack during gym class, working with the strategy above can help them calm down being in that setting. In addition, giving the child a safe word that discreetly allows them to leave when they start to feel overwhelmed can help the child feel more comfortable in that scenario.
